Both the BMP receptor-associated Smads (1, 5, and 8) and the TGF-[beta] receptor-associated Smads (2 and 3) are released into the cytoplasm upon phosphorylation, complex with Smad4, and translocate into the nucleus where they regulate gene expression. TGF-[beta] proteins are mediated by members of the Smad family of transcription activators, and Smads also affect BMP signaling in some situations.
