The Freeh memo refers to the SPLC as one source for the information that McVeigh had called Elohim City seeking Strassmeir and that Strassmeir was planning to flee the United States.
The SPLC ran a photo of Parker flanked by Leonard Wilson, a board member of the white supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens, and Mike Whorton, Alabama state leader of the League of the South, a group that favors pulling the states of the Confederacy out of the United States.
Through well-publicized cases, the SPLC managed, among other feats, to shut down the United Klans of America, and it forced the FBI to open some of its secret Civil Rights files.
