The Safe Motherhood Initiative began in 1987, with the aim of reducing the number of mothers dying in the developing world. A New Perspective on Maternal Mortality in Mexico includes a broad perspective on maternal mortality in this country through the following chapters: The Dimensions of Maternal Mortality in Mexico; Gains and Setbacks in the Prevention and Reduction of Maternal Mortality; Experiences in Combating Maternal Mortality; Health Posts for Pregnant Women; Five Years of the Safe Motherhood Initiative in Mexico; Perspectives on Safe Motherhood in Mexico. World Bank assisted projects like the Philippines Women's Health and Safe Motherhood Initiative which offers comprehensive service delivery in the area of maternal care, family planning, diagnosis and treatment of RTIs and Sexually Transmitted Diseases, and detection and treatment of cervical cancer has not led to better health access for women as SRH services and drug costs remain prohibitively high for poor women. |
