A serious adverse event was any event that was fatal, life-threatening, or permanently or temporarily incapacitating or disabling, or that resulted in hospitalization. Leaders have an obligation to their patients and to their staff to help heal the emotional trauma that follows a serious adverse event. Nursing unit manager Bernie Beyer said the impetus for improving communication came from an incident several years ago, when the hospital experienced 'probably its most serious adverse event ever'. |
