In 1999 there were 68,745 sewing machine operators in Los Angeles County, nearly two-thirds of whom had entered the country since 1985 and who were earning between about $11,400 and $13,200 a year, according to census data. Sewing machine operators in Los Angeles typically make $7 or $8 an hour, compared to operators in Mexico who make about $1, he said. There are better-paying jobs in the garment industry, such as markers, cutters, production managers and quality-control supervisors, but few sewing machine operators have enough training or English-language skills to make the transition. |
