An example of this tug of war over waterfront land use is the controversy over the 730 foot ship repair facility called a graving dock that is literally being buried under the Ikea parking lot in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The Port of Long Beach wants to expand by taking 186 acres of shipyard property for container terminals, 36 acres for a scrap metal yard, 17 acres for a ship repair facility and 15 acres for liquid bulk terminals. The city and Thunder Bay Harbour Commission are fighting to preserve the Lakehead's only dry-dock ship repair facility and the 30 jobs that go with it. |
