amp;ldquo;I think we’re seeing an effect similar to what was observed in the fields of corn yield champions Herman Warsaw and Francis Childs, in which soil organic matter levels increased under a regime of continuous corn [and conservation tillage],” Beck says. Under the climatic conditions of the experiment, the sludge nitrogen would be equivalent to about 70 kg nitrogen from mineral fertilizer, with much of the rest of the nitrogen (and carbon) going into soil organic matter stocks. These include strategies to boost agricultural production per unit of land or water, increase soil organic matter in croplands, augment green space in urban areas, and maintain local biodiversity and ecosystem services. |
