More than 400 experts in various disciplines, 80 members of a steering committee, and 14 government agencies collaborated to gather scientific data that led to the adoption of the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan as part of Pima County's land use plan in 2001.
Recently Pima County passed one of the most aggressive sustainability resolutions of any jurisdiction outlining its goals to reduce pollutants, conserve resources, and maximize the livability of the region in line with the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan.
The ironwood studies and other research results have also been used by Pima County in developing its Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan (see the following article).
