Theoreticians had proposed, and experimenters were verifying, the standard model of particle physics, a detailed but incomplete picture of matter and its interactions.
After years of analysis of the neutrino-nucleus collisions, a surprise emerged: About 1 percent fewer collisions produced neutrinos than predicted by the standard model of particle physics.
They are part of the foundation of physics, embedded deeply in both the classical science and quantum mechanics, as well as in relativity and the so-called standard model of particle physics.
