The NFHS calculated a standard of living index (IIPS and ORC Macro 2000b) by assigning an index score to each household based on characteristics such as house type, toilet facility, source of lighting, main fuel for cooking, source of drinking water, separate room for cooking, house ownership, and ownership of agricultural land, irrigated land, livestock, and durable goods.
The Standard of Living Index developed by Brown for the years 1918, 1935, 1950, 1973 and 1988 has three principal categories, the consumption category, the income category, and the needs category.
