A year ago, the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement (SSUTA) developed under the Streamlined Sales Tax Project (SSTP) became effective, when at least 10 states encompassing at least 20% of the U.
Eighteen states implement the Streamlined Sales Tax Project in a bid to make online sales easier and collect some revenue along the way.
The coming months will pose many challenges to tax professionals--from the proposals of the President's tax reform panel (see Eli Dicker's column), the ongoing stream of regulations from the IRS, budget proposals in Canada, and the enduring effects of Sarbanes-Oxley, to the Supreme Court's decision in Curio, implementation of the Streamlined Sales Tax Project, and the continuing repercussions of the federal government's initiative against tax shelters.
