The two most common isolates were alpha-hemolytic streptococci and Streptococcus pyogenes in that order.
In addition, viridans group streptococci have been implicated as reservoirs of erythromycin-resistance genes, possibly capable of transferring resistance determinants to more pathogenic species including Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus pyogenes (Bryskier 2002).
