When Krasker, a New Hampshire native, was working as an archivist of a series of restored Gershwin musicals in the late '80s, he was sent to California to check out a production of one of iris projects, Strike Up the Band, by a Pasadena troupe. Jittery about how audiences might react to such a biting satire in troubled times, the producer of Strike Up the Band ordered Kaufman and Ryskind to soften the show's sharper edges. The M-G-M musical classics in this collection are the duo's most famous and successful teamings: Babes in Arms, Babes on Broadway, Strike Up the Band and Girl Crazy. |
