Although many trees have died over time from old age or encroaching development, the thousands that are surviving are doing relatively well and are not affected by sudden oak death syndrome like trees farther north in California, experts said. In addition, dispersal of the oomycete plant pathogen Phytophthora ramorum, causing sudden oak death in North America and Europe, is mediated by human activity as well as natural factors (31-33).
