In the interests of harmonizing the regulatory requirements among different jurisdictions (GHTF members: Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan and the United States, as well as other signatories), the summary technical documentation may be used to describe how the device was developed, designed and manufactured and also demonstrate how the device meets the "Essential Principles of Safety and Performance of Medical Devices.
This is similar to the requirements outlined in the Global Harmonization Task Force's Summary Technical Documentation for Demonstrating Conformity to the Essential Principles of Safety and Performance of Medical Devices.
