The latest supersonic combustion ramjets, called scramjets, burn air for fuel, and could one day carry people to space or around the world in a matter of hours.
The so-called Supersonic Combustion Ramjet - or scramjet - engine was designed to travel at speeds of up to 5,000 mph, or 10 times the speed of conventional aircraft.
The goal of the $230 million program is to advance technologies for a scramjet - or supersonic combustion ramjet - engine, an ultra-high-speed engine that draws oxygen for combustion from the atmosphere rather than carrying it as a rocket ship does.
