As chief from 1969 to 1978, Davis led a department that had more than its fair share of challenges: Anti-war protests, airline hijackings, the Manson Family and the Symbionese Liberation Army. In 1973, Kilgore belonged to the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), a Marxist terrorist cult that became notorious for kidnapping and brainwashing newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst. THE SYMBIONESE LIBERATION ARMY (SLA), led by ex-convict Donald DeFreeze, had revolutionary ideals that were influenced in part by the student anti-Vietnam War movements of the 1960s and by prison programs that urged African Americans to unite against oppression and capitalistic exploitation. |
