As reported in The Miami Herald Mexico, this agreement will give Banorte access to 1,554 government telegraph offices and expand its operations into 500 Mexican municipalities where it does not currently have branches. In 1866, the first telegraph office was set up here. But despite authorization from the Colonial Office, the governor, apparently in order to maintain good relations with the Cantonese, agreed to accept their appointee as "Commercial Agent in charge of the Chinese Telegraph Office in Hong Kong" on condition that he was a genuine merchant unconnected with politics and persona grata to the Hong Kong government. |
