Five states (California, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island) and Puerto Rico have a state-administered temporary disability insurance system or require employers to offer temporary disability insurance. Beginning in July 2004, California will become the first state in the nation to provide paid Family Temporary Disability insurance ( The new Family Temporary Disability Insurance becomes a benefit under the state's existing disability insurance program and will allow up to six weeks' paid leave (at 55 percent of their full salary) for individuals caring for a severely ill or injured relative or life partner, or for a new child (either through birth, adoption, or foster placement). |
