Terfenol-D is a combination of iron and rare earth metals grown into crystals and harvested in only two places worldwide -- China and Iowa. Smart Materials are a billion dollar market and Terfenol-D is the most efficient of the smart materials. SatCon's other SBIR programs, each valued at $75,000, were announced on February 16, 1996 and include: (1) an award to research fatigue performance and failure modeling for high-speed composite flywheels, (2) a grant to research nonlinear modeling and control of Terfenol-D actuators, and (3) a program to manufacture micromechanical linear displacement sensors. |
