Written by Julie Nelson, who has taught in at-risk early childhood settings for nearly 30 years, Families Change: A Book for Children Experiencing Termination of Parental Rights is a simple, softcover picturebook about the realities of when families have big problems and need to change so that kids can be safe.
The consequences for women range from reporting and testing by health care professionals (the results of which are often used in child welfare proceedings) to termination of parental rights or forced rehabilitation.
In Florida, for example, 8,900 child dependency petitions were filed in 1997 alone as a result of child abuse investigations, with approximately 1,740 of those cases resulting in termination of parental rights (Davis, 1998).
