According to the Urban Agriculture Network, a non-governmental organization that supports urban agriculture development worldwide, more than a third of the world's urban areas are used for farming, with US metropolitan areas producing more than 30 percent of the dollar value of domestic agricultural production.
Jac Smit, president of The Urban Agriculture Network (TUAN) and co-author of Urban Agriculture: Food, Jobs, and Sustainable Cities, recently released by TUAN and the UN Development Programme, claims that urban agriculture already produces 15 percent of the world's food, and that it has the potential "to produce one-quarter of the nutritional needs of the global population where they live.
