and the Timmins and District Hospital, project leaders behind Timmins' geothermal project were sifting through, and shortlisting, proposals received from a number of engineering firms to explore and evaluate the potential behind what is being called cavern thermal energy storage at the decommissioned McIntyre and Hollinger mines. The building has about 435,000 square feet of rentable space and high technology features like a thermal energy storage system that produces coolant during off-peak hours for peak daytime usage. One downtown highrise, the 801 Tower, has incorporated thermal energy storage (TES) technology into its cooling system in the form of ice balls, water-filled plastic balls that are frozen then release cooling energy as they thaw during peak hours. |
