Sandia scientists were developing electric generators powered by radiant heat, as from a furnace, falling onto thermophotovoltaic (TPV) cells. Spire Corporation (Nasdaq: SPIR) today announced that has been awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant to develop a new type of thermophotovoltaic (TPV) power cell that produces electricity from heat. Such structures may dramatically boost the efficiency of incandescent light bulbs and of thermophotovoltaic devices, which convert radiated heat into electricity, says research leader Shawn Yu Lin of the Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N. |
