Khan et al (3) examined the pain location in the lower limb of 120 patients awaiting total hip arthroplasty or spinal decompression, and anterior thigh pain was found to be present in 70% of the patients with symptomatic hip OA.
In my opinion, the only argument for a surface replacement over total hip arthroplasty is that if the hip resurfacing fails, it is easier to revise to a conventional total hip than to revise a conventional total hip to another conventional total hip.
It was a poignant moment when Wellington School of Medicine senior lecturer in orthopaedic surgery, Peter Devane, concluded his presentation on total hip arthroplasty following reconstruction, by introducing the patient to the audience, who were then able to ask questions.
