Concerning the return of land, we commence with a brief statement of the historical context, followed by a discussion of the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975, which initiated a process of restitution, and its 1985 amendment, which greatly expanded the scope of potential claims against the government. Maori grievances date back to the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 between Queen Victoria and Maori. |
