British ports are not happy with the European Commission's proposals to liberalise port services: the association representing most of the UK's major ports, UKMPG (United Kingdom Major Ports Group Ltd), has said that while it supports the principle of competition between ports, it is against competition in ports.
UKMPG says that the Commission's proposal is completely unecessary, since the current policy on state aid and competition rules applied in ports has allowed the sector to improve performance and invest - and could even be damaging.
Russ McCallion, PD Ports' Group HR director, said: "As a business we are now one of the safest ports and logistics operations within the UK, consistently performing better than the national target set by the Ports Skills Safety, the skills and safety training arm of the UKMPG (United Kingdom Major Ports Group) year on year.
