Ian Paisley's anti-Agreement Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) increased its number of Nips from two to five at the expense of the larger Ulster Unionist Party (UUP); Sinn Fein (which stands for Westminster elections but does not participate in national government in Britain) vaulted fro m two to four at the expense of the soft nationalist Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP). Its deft handling of the sensibilities of David Trimble, head of the Ulster Unionist Party, allowed the Protestant politician to engage in unprecedented dialogue with archenemy Sinn Fein in a way that limited the political damage to Trimble and his party. The eight are: Nobel Peace prize winners David Trimble of the Ulster Unionist Party and John Hume of the Social Democratic and Labor Party; Gerry Adams of Sinn Fein; John Alderdice of the Alliance Party; David Ervine of the Progressive Unionist Party; Monica McWilliams of the Northern Ireland Women's Coalition; Gary McMichael of the Ulster Democratic Party; and Malachi Curran of the Northern Ireland Labor Party. |
