For the IRA, as noted, the presence of British troops gives them a heaven-sent raison d'etre; for the Ulster Volunteer Force and other Protestant extremists, the activity of the IRA gives them theirs. ``Anything can happen,'' said David Ervine, leader of the Progressive Unionist Party, which has ties to the Protestant paramilitary Ulster Volunteer Force. What went unnoticed in the United States however, was that Sinn Fein's Protestant physical force counterparts - the political wings of the Protestant paramilitaries, the outlawed Ulster Volunteer Force and the Ulster Defence Association - polled 6 percent of the vote. |
