A technique known as underground coal gasification - hitherto impossible or cost a lot to bring to the surface - is the preferred method to tap energy from coal.
Earlier this year Paul Younger, HSBC professor of energy and environment at Newcastle University, warned the work done by his team to pioneer a process called Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) in the region was in peril.
He has questioned how much space there is for underground storage, and is instead urging the Government to look at underground coal gasification alongside carbon capture.
