Economics professor Bill Harbaugh has challenged the program, known as the Underrepresented Minority Recruitment Program, in e-mails to UO President Dave Frohnmayer. By demystifying education and making connections between academe and society, such a program might significantly enhance the education of first-generation and underrepresented minority students, an effect already well-documented by the IE educational philosophy and Pre-Grad Internship; these groups comprise nearly half of Pre-Grad interns, and this is more than a coincidence. The school is aimed at students who might not otherwise consider college as an option -- students from families where no one has gone to college, low socioeconomic status, underrepresented minority groups, or those who are capable of doing better but are underperforming in a traditional setting, said Jill Zimmerman, AVC's dean of student services. |
