How to design instruction--The Understanding by Design model provides teachers with the tools they need to design curriculum that focuses on understanding rather than just knowledge and skills. Jay McTighe, director of the Maryland Assessment Consortium and co-author of Understanding by Design (Wiggins & McTighe, 1998). According to Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe, the authors of Understanding by Design Handbook (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, 1999), teachers should work "backward," beginning the design process by determining and prioritizing what we want our students to have understood by the unit's end. |
