Mbtps1 and a number of other genes are needed to help process unfolded proteins by activating the unfolded protein response, but the diminished capacity of Mbtps1 causes unfolded protein to build up.
Our gene expression analysis also suggests another novel aspect underlying methapyrilene-mediated hepatotoxicity, namely, ER stress resulting from the unfolded protein response [reviewed by Boyce and Yuan (2006)].
Among the unifying themes are that core unfolded protein response factors are conserved among all species active in the decay, and that particular mRNA-associated proteins are important to it.
