His presentation also provided an overview of Columbia University Center for High Density Development's claim that high density development (which he calls urban clusters or clustering) offers competitive advantages. It delineates urban area and urban cluster boundaries to encompass densely settled territory, which consists of (a) core census block groups that have a population density of at least 1,000 people per square mile, and (b) surrounding census blocks that have an overall density of at least 500 people per square mile. The aim of the Dublin-Belfast Development Corridor is to link several towns and cities by various modes of communication in order to create a poly-centric mega-city region in Ireland on a scale large enough to compete with the major urban clusters of continental Europe. |
