It was found that a tiny RNA molecule, called microRNA-145 (miR-145), not only had all the information necessary to turn a stem cell into a vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC), but could also affect VSMCs in the adult artery.
We, therefore, focused on traditional Japanese herbal medicines (Kampo medicines) used to ameliorate the impairment of microcirculation or blood stasis and screened them for their ability to inhibit rat VSMC proliferation.
Whether these effects of aldosterone are mediated via hemodynamic effects, such as increased blood pressure, by sodium retention, or by direct effects on VSMC are uncertain, and whether aldosterone-induced vascular fibrosis is mediated via the activation of the NHE is also poorly understood.
