In Sumatra, Sommer, West and Indonesiancolleagues achieved striking reductions in childhood mortality through once-every-six-months administration of a high-dose vitamin A capsule. One high-dose vitamin A capsule, given to a child twice a year for four years, can prevent that child from going blind due to vitamin A deficiency (VAD). With just two high-dose vitamin A capsules given to children each year starting at age one, for a course of four to five years, Schiffer and his team were able to wipe out the deficiency in the villages and eliminate blindness that usually resulted by age four or five. |
