The team combined the WMAP data with X-ray observations and found the clusters were streaming at up to 1000 kilometres per second towards one particular part of the cosmos.
Scanning the rest of the microwave spectrum is an array of 22 microwave receivers, similar to those used on WMAP but cooled to 20 kelvins by one of Planck's three cryocoolers.
The speaker began by showing a recent all-sky image of the radio emission called the cosmic microwave background (CMB) as observed by NASA's WMAP satellite, explaining that this radio emission dated from when the Universe had been a mere 500,000 years old, and that it had been travelling through space ever since.
