Bill Gale, of the Wansbeck Council for Voluntary Service (WCVS), said: "Participatory budgeting is a new and novel way of spending public money by giving more people a direct say in determining what projects and priorities are deserving of support in their own communities.
Grants to help the elderly include pounds 120,000 to Age Concern Newcastle to provide advice and information on welfare benefits, pension credits and community care, and Wansbeck Council for Voluntary Service will receive pounds 45,000 over three years for its enabling project, where volunteers help older people to get to appointments, shops and leisure facilities.
Wansbeck Council for Voluntary Service has been awarded over pounds 180,000 from the Learning & Skills Council Northumberland.
