[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] The objectives for Phase I and Phase II composting are to: 1) soften rigid plant materials; 2) increase the water holding capacity of the raw materials; 3) form complex carbohydrates to preserve carbon for the mushroom; 4) generate and subsequently convert ammonia to microbial protein; 5) create substrate with sufficient nutrients to grow a good crop of mushrooms while providing little or no nutrition for other fungi and competitor organisms. Easily considered to be one of the hugest water parks in the whole of Northern Texas, Hurricane Harbor has a whopping 3 million gallon water holding capacity and a shed area comprising 50 acres. Since water does not easily penetrate clay soils and it manages to pass too quickly beyond the root zone of plants in sandy soils, adding an organic matter to clay and sandy soils will increase the penetrability of clay soils and the water holding capacity of the sandy ones. |
