Developed and manufactured in South Africa using finite element modelling and computer-aided engineering techniques, the slag launder consists of water-cooled copper launder sections with patented launder connection blocks. It utilizes a rotating, water-cooled copper, non-consumable electrode, and melting is performed by a high-current DC arc. For this study, the theoretical densities of the three Al-Si alloys were determined from the bottom portion of degassed specimens that had been poured into a water-cooled copper mold that, due to the relatively high solidification rate, would produce a density very close to theoretical. |
