Dr Stephen Roberts will talk on the history of the WEA and its role and achievements at the Literary & Philosophical Society on Westgate Road, Newcastle, at 7pm.
To mark the event, the WEA is planning a programme of social events, debates, cultural activities and conferences.
The grant has been allocated to the West Midlands region of educational charity WEA from the Government's community empowerment fund.
