But in California, which has had whirling disease at least since 1965 when it was discovered near Monterey, it is hard to see any ill effects in trout.
Since its accidental introduction from Europe in 1958, whirling disease has been detected in 22 states, from California to New Hampshire.
Whirling disease spores (Myxobolus cerebralis) are released into the water when infected fish die and decompose, or when they are consumed and excreted by predators or scavengers.
