This is only the ninth time a Wilson's Phalarope has been seen in Lancashire and the third time at Martin Mere, after sightings in 1990 and 1991.
Today, the refuge is temporary home to 1 million northern pintail - a quarter of the continent's population - 500,000 of the small shorebirds called Wilson's phalaropes, and 400,000 eared grebes.
The beach is dotted with avocets, Wilson's phalaropes and other migrating and nesting birds attracted to the island.
