Lowe,(200) the plaintiffs challenged the Forest Service's planning for old-growth forests on the Winema National Forest in south-central Oregon. Serving on the Winema National Forest out of Oregon's Klamath Palls, we were spending an intense summer week on the Chemult Ranger District some 60 miles to the north, seeking out the finest old, growth ponderosa pine from a wide-ranging mosaic totaling nearly 10,000 acres. 1 million roadless acres in the state are in Eastern Oregon, and include the Malheur, Ochoco, Umatilla, Wallowa-Whitman and Winema national forests. |
