In his wryly intelligent reading, Lebanese-born director Pierre Audi deftly transposes the action from Roman times to our own, making Partenope a wealthy woman of leisure, who wiles away her time in her modernist glass-and-concrete home with her various lovers and hangers-on.
It's all very well for a wealthy woman of leisure to wear three-inch talons, but they're not very practical when you've got to peel your own potatoes.
While Lesley admits to enjoying life as a woman of leisure who indulges herself in the joys of spring cleaning and yoga, the life led by Lady Helen Clyde in the books of The Inspector Lynley Mysteries isn't for her.
