In 1955, as a means of recognizing the best in photojournalism, three Dutch photographers (members of Nederlandse Vereniging van Fotojournalisten) established the World Press Photo competition.
At a time when winning entries for the World Press Photo competition are carefully composed and highly aesthetic, no matter how gruesome the subject matter, Hondius's glossy depictions of politically charged scenes can trigger a flash of (mis-)recognition.
Since then, The Times's photography and photo editing have been recognized with a first place award from World Press Photo, the Overseas Press Club's Robert Capa Award and its award for feature photography, and numerous other photo editing awards from Best of Photojournalism and Pictures of the Year.
