But in Yala, a small city in the deep south of Thailand, the situation is far different. The area is bisected by the Yala River (Figure 1); most mosquito larval habitats were found on river banks in the bottom of the valley and on the banks of streams during both dry and rainy seasons (18). Since then, however, officials have variously claimed that the attackers were Muslims only out for criminal goals, or that they are, indeed, separatists who want to create a Muslim state consisting of the provinces of Yala, Narathiwat, Pattani, Satun and Songkhla (the first three have been under martial law since January). |
