The Yei of Ngamiland in Botswana were known for a type of beadwork in which white and black (and sometimes red) were contrasted to form true optical illusions. We follow the fair from preparations ("4-H members groom their animals for the competitions") through ritual ("as they watch the Yei dance, Grandpa explains the songs to Nezbah and [her brother] Kiineez"), a parade, dance competition, lots of food, and just plain fun ("at the top of the ferris wheel, Nezbah shows her cousin-sister the Shiprock peak in the distance"). |
