THE YUI LABOR EXCHANGE SYSTEM Labor exchange between Ooya (patron) and Nago (client) Japanese rural sociologist Kizaemon Ariga, made an empirical study of cooperative labor organizations in rural Japan known as yui (or sukeai), through the method of writing a detailed ethnography of one rural community, namely, Ishigami village in Iwate Prefecture of northern Japan.
