The book, written by a chap with the splendid name of Robert M Pirsig, is called Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and was delivered by a regular reader of this column, whose identity I'll not reveal.
In Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance, Robert Pirsig's nameless narrator, travelling with his son, pulls up at Crater Lake in Oregon, a natural wonder of vivid blue water surrounded by sheer cliffs.
